Sub Zero 501 no cold, Repair – Mountain View, CA

The customer has standalone built-in Sub Zero 501 no cold. Also, they had some water leak from the fridge. They called our company and made an appointment for repair. I arrived at their place and troubleshoot the unit. There were a few issues. One was frost built up on the evaporator coil. The other was a clogged drain which caused the leak.

I offered replacement of the evaporator coil. Also, I offered replacement of the compressor. Reason to that is the old one is running on R-12 refrigerant and was 29 years old. Most likely that I recharge the system with the proper amount of replacement refrigerant it would die.

I could finish this job same day but because of time limitation client scheduled repair for the next week. Leaks on the evaporator coils are the very common problem for Sub Zero units that’s why we keep almost all coils for old units in stock. Same day repair allows us to keep the high level of customer satisfaction.

First I removed all shelves, back panel, and bottom grille.

Second I disconnected the temperature sensor and cut old coil. I welded the new evaporator coil and hooked up the sensor. I also cleaned the clogged drain tube with steam.

Third I cut an old dryer filter and uninstall the old compressor. Also, I vacuumed the area below the fridge and clean the condenser coil. I install the new compressor, dryer filter and welded all copper connections.

Fourth I charged the system with new freon. The amount of freon is on the service bulletin which comes with the new evaporator coil kit.

Finally, I run capillary tubes from cold control through the coil and mounted them on the back wall. Also, I installed the back wall with scale, shelves and light cover.

Now the customer has the brand new sealed system which will run for another 15 years.

Another happy customer!
