A client had problems with Sub Zero 650 frost buildup. This is the top/bottom built-in unit. Be more specific fridge side was warm and there was big ice built up on the fridge floor. After diagnostics, I figured out a few issues. Number one issue was the refrigerant leak on the evaporator coil, because of that fridge did not produce cold. Another issue was the frozen condensation build up on the floor. Reason to that is bad insulation between freezer and fridge compartments. This is a common issue for old Sub Zero units. Because of that manufacturer created the special kit, which will keep the floor warm and drain tube defrosted all the time.
I started repair after permission for repair from the client.
First I removed all shelves, drawers and back wall to have access to internal components.
Second I cut an old coil, weld new evaporator coil and mount the temperature sensor to it.
Third I replaced the dryer fitter and recharge the system with proper amount of freon, specified on service bulletin which comes with new evaporator coils.
Fourth I started the installation of this heating kit. I run the flexible heater through the coil and stuck it inside the drain tube. This will keep the drain tube warm all the time and prevent it from frizzing in the future. Then I glued the heater pad on the bottom and connected the wiring to existing power source. After I cover the bottom with the plastic cover, which will cover all these electrical components and prevent creating condensation on the bottom.
Finally, I run several tests to make sure that additional heaters I installed were warm and the pressure inside the sealed system is in the scope. After installation of this kit client never suppose to experienced frost buildup issue again.
Another happy customer!
